Special needs dogs pose a unique challenge for the rescue & shelter community. Pit Bulls (not even a breed at all but a loose term for a collection of three breeds and legion of look-a-likes), when appropriately selected and evaluated, can be responsibly re-homed, and are entitled to the same humane consideration as any other dog.
To meet this challenge, Misunderstood Rescue has teamed up with the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, to create PET BULL HALL. Pet Bull Hall will be an innovative education, adoption, and spay/ neuter program for Pit Bulls in the Charlottesville area. The goal of this project is to show off and adopt out the best of the Pit Bull breed, educate the public about the breed and enhance the Pit Bull’s tarnished image.
Volunteers will be the key to the programs success. By nature Pit Bulls are very people oriented. If left alone in a kennel environment for too long, their behavior may deteriorate. They like to be around people and need people to be around. Knowing that it can take some time to find a good home for a Pit Bull, it is important to have an environment enrichment program in place. This program will incorporate occasional outings, obedience training, kennel activity, people interaction, and playtime with other dogs.
Another goal of this program will be to make sure these dogs are placed in equally qualified home. We will need help and support with home visits, support for the new adopters, and adoption follow- ups. Finally we will need support educating the public. This will includes distributing educational materials, providing behavior and training advice and promoting responsible Pit Bull ownership.
However, we can’t do this alone. We need your help. The success of this program will only succeed with the help and support of people like you. Volunteers are VITAL to this program.
We need you, your time, and experience to bring hope into the lives of our Pit Bulls. Please join us, the 3rd Sunday of every month. Volunteer Orientation begins at 11am. Our “Bully” Adoptions take place from 1pm to 5pm. And our Pit Bull parenting classes, “Responsi-Bull Parenting, will take place at 2pm.
